The Effects of Covert Narcissism on Procrastination in Early Adulthood: The Double Mediating Effects of Shame and Avoidant-Distractive Emotional Regulation Style

Abstract
This study was to examine the double mediating effect of shame and avoidant-distractive emotional regulation style in the relationship between covert narcissism and procrastination in early adulthood. A total of 420 responses were analyzed using SPSS PROCESS macro. The results of this study are as follows. First, there were a statistically significant relationship between covert narcissism, shame, avoidant-distractive emotional regulation style, and procrastination. Second, shame partially mediated the relation between covert narcissism and procrastination. Third, avoidant-distractive emotional regulation style partially mediated the relation between covert narcissism and procrastination. Finally, shame and avoidant-distractive emotional regulation style showed double mediating effect in the sequential pathway between covert narcissism procrastination. However, the direct effect of shame on procrastination was insignificant. Implications and limitations of the study and recommendations for future research were discussed.
